I just updated my “Simple Remedies” file, which you all got upon subscribing.
I haven’t updated it on the “pretty file” it’s been on - it’s a lot of words & it’s too small of font for me to read, so I need to rethink how to reformat that completely. I just got back from Las Vegas and have a lot I need to do (appointments, grocery shopping, other things I’m inspired to work on) so I am not sure when I will update the pretty file.
However, I thought I would send it all to you in this word file, and you can have the remedies!
Please feel free to save this, and also, please be sure to credit my SubStack if you choose to share it with someone else.

Simple Remedies
Activated Charcoal
Buying activated charcoal at an aquarium supply shop is super cheap. There are many other ways to buy it, but the other ways can be so pricey.
Have a smell in your home that needs to go? Maybe you have pets and don’t notice the smell, but your friends and visitors complain? Put some activated charcoal in a bowl or on a plate and hide it somewhere. Maybe under the couch or behind the cookie jar. It absorbs smells far better than anything else out there.
Activated charcoal can also help with an overdose situation. The vet gave it to my dog when he ate onions. I have also heard of someone who took too many “benzos” and ate activated charcoal to counteract the effect. Best to leave this kind of stuff to doctors, please.
Important note: activated charcoal interferes with birth control, anxiety, depression and cancer medicines.
Aloe Vera
It is good to have an aloe Vera plant if you’re able to. They like sun. Water a little bit once a week. Don’t overwater it. They need good drainage. If you get a cut or a burn, thank the plant for helping you, and then nicely take a stalk of the plant. Cut off the green outer part of the stem. Use the gel inside to soothe over your cut or burn. It will feel so good.
You can also blend the white gel from inside the stalk of the plant with water in a blender and drink it.
Baking Soda
When my stomach is producing too much acid, I often put a tiny amount, like a pinch of baking soda into a shot glass of water and drink it quickly. It tastes terrible the first few times you do this. Just drink it fast. Don’t do this every day, or too often. But it’s a great remedy for now and then.
Equal parts of baking soda mixed with sugar, placed in places where you see cockroaches will help get rid of them. They eat it if it’s mixed with sugar, and it expands their bellies which kills them because of their exoskeleton.
Ginger
Ginger has long been a remedy for soothing an upset stomach. When I was pregnant, I bought ginger lollipops and ginger candies to soothe my stomach.
I get ginger ale when I am on a plane, and my son got ginger ale when we went on a boat to watch whales, when his stomach was giving him fits.
My grandfather liked to drink ginger ale when his stomach was upset or when he was dealing with acid reflux.
Sushi places give slices of pickled ginger, which is delicious when put in a glass of water, to drink.
Ginger root is sold at grocery stores. You can peel it with a vegetable peeler and put the peeled ginger into water, or a lot of it into a pitcher of water, to drink from throughout the day.
Hydrogen Peroxide
After brushing your teeth at night, you can swish hydrogen peroxide around your mouth for as long as you can stand it (2-20 minutes at the most). It will whiten your smile! It tastes identical to those plastic whitening strips that are much more expensive.
Hydrogen Peroxide is also excellent at getting blood stains out of clothes.
Lavender
Lavender is a wonderful, relaxing scent. Some people are able to grow beautiful lavender in their yard, in a nice, sunny spot. When I lived in Shenandoah, Virginia, there was a Lavender Farm not too far from me, where I was able to buy a bunch of lavender. I crushed up the leaves and cut the stems, and put them in to soap when I made black lavender soap. It smells so good!
Some people love to put a few drops of lavender oil on their pillow to help them sleep at night. Others put lavender in their bath water to soothe away aches.
Lavender can be purchased in hemp or CBD oil, and taken in ½ a dropper to help soothe aches and find calm in our body.
I love lavender ice cream! It’s delicious and makes me feel like all the time and cares of the world have melted away around me, while I eat the delectable ice cream.
I have also found a lavender chamomile tea at night helps me wind down and get ready for bedtime.
An acquaintance of mine loves to fill his bath with lavender and CBD bath bombs and says it eases his chronic pain.
Lemon Juice for Bug Bites
A farmer friend of mine taught me that putting lemon juice on a cotton ball and swabbing the bite relieves the pain and itch.
Lemon Juice and Honey
A simple syrup made of Lemon Juice + Honey can soothe a sore throat or help calm a cough.
Lemon for Cockroaches
Lemon Juice or Lemon Oil won’t kill cockroaches, but it will deter them. Add 1 part lemon juice to 4 parts hot water and use it to wipe down your kitchen and bathroom and any other place in your home.
Lemon Oil can be expensive, but if you mix 20 drops of it with 3/4 spray bottle of water, you can use it as an antiseptic on your surfaces to wipe away food sources that cockroaches love. If the oil spray leaves a slippery film, wipe it down with a towel until it shines.
Lemon Peels can also be a good deterrent for cockroaches. They hate the smell.
Local Honey
You can get local honey from a local farmer or a farmer’s market. It’s considered “local” if it is from bees that are in your own county. Local honey is a wonderful remedy that builds up over time, for allergies. Stir a teaspoon of it into your morning tea or coffee to get the benefits of it.
Marshmallows
Eating a large marshmallow helps soothe a sore throat.
Milk
When eating something that is too spicy, drink a glass of milk. It will soothe your tongue. It’s likely that if you touch your face after you have touched something spicy, that rinsing with milk may help that situation, too.
Warm Milk in a mug helps promote sleep at night. Add a little nutmeg for flavor, if you like.
Probiotics
When taking antibiotics, be sure to also take a probiotic. I am not sure why doctors don’t consistently recommend this. Antibiotics kill off the bacteria in your body - all of it. We need some of the good bacteria in our gut, so it’s important to re-seed our gut with probiotics. Yogurt, sauerkraut and kombucha are all good probiotics. I have a lemon-ginger probiotic tea I love to drink almost every day. It helps your stomach’s digestion, too. You can also purchase probiotics in a pill form.
Antibiotics and Birth Control
This next thing was taught to me by an observant friend:
Many people don’t know this next thing about antibiotics, and doctors don’t seem to share this knowledge, that when a woman is on birth control, the birth control doesn’t work nearly as effectively when she is taking antibiotics. This is something to be aware of.
Table Salt
If you spill a red drink on the carpet (punch or wine for instance), pour a generous amount of table salt on the carpet over the stain while it’s still wet. Let the salt dry (it may take a while), then vacuum it up. (If you don’t let it dry, it will clog your vacuum. I learned this the hard way.)
Mix table salt with water and swish around in your mouth to help with canker sores, too.
Tea Tree Oil
A tiny bit of this dabbed on an acne spot helps dry it out. Be aware that Tea Tree Oil has quite an exotic, bright, fresh smell. It can be quite strong, with a scent that lingers.
Vinegar
Wet a wash cloth with water and then dip it in a little vinegar. Use it to rinse “private parts” can help remove organic smells that are unpleasant. (Works for underarm smell, too.)
Put a solution of a little bit of vinegar with a lot of water into a “peri bottle” (which is just like a easy-to-squeeze-squirt bottle, like a ketchup condiment bottle) and rinse the area - this works to remove organic smells that are unpleasant.
Rinse with plain water after.
Water
If you have a bad sunburn, drink a bunch of water throughout the day. A gallon if you can. Add aloe to it if you’re able to, too. It’s soothing and delicious!
With joy,
