My boys have pointed out that whenever I travel, I bring the good weather with me.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Back in the 80s, I visited Vancouver, Canada for the first time - the weather was gorgeous. There were rainbow wind socks everywhere. And the ferry ride to Vancouver island was so incredibly fun. I loved the whole trip. I got to eat maple ice cream and see Redwood trees and play with a dog and a kitten who were staying with my great-grandparents.
The second time I went to Vancouver, I was an adult in my late 20s. The weather was, again, just gorgeous. This time, I was visiting my mum and my great-grandmother who lived with her then.
We had such a nice visit. The whole thing was lovely. My (deceased) grandmother’s first cousin (they grew up like sisters after WWII was over) visited and we went to brunch in the Victoria Gardens.
So many people remarked to me that usually it was always raining. But I was so lucky the weather was beautiful for my visit! They also pointed out that the rain made the flowers bloom and be so beautiful.
I have countless examples of this kind of thing. It’s crazy! It happened at every vacation with my boys, too. They are the ones who pointed it out to me - I was the common factor in all these stories.
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
I am currently in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
I am loving it here! The weather is gorgeous every time I go out for a walk with my dogs, or to a gathering of fiddle players.
I go in my hotel to regroup and rest. And then I go back outside, and it’s clear it has rained while I was inside, but it’s beautiful and sunshiny when I get outside. It has happened so many times during this trip!
I was a lot more aware of the rain when I was staying in a tent last week in North Sydney on the beautiful Cabot Trail. In my tent - raining. Outside my tent? Beautiful sunny day.
Las Vegas, Nevada
I took my kids to Las Vegas last August. I wrote about it, here on SubStack.
The day before we visiting and for a few days before the visit, there had been torrential rain. It was so bad that the streets had flooded! There isn’t apparently the infrastructure in Las Vegas to deal with rain like that - no gutter system, according to our taxi driver who picked us up from the airport and drove us to the Bellagio, where we were staying.
The water was still running down the streets and clearing away when we arrived. It wasn’t that bad, just a bit of rain water.
After we arrived, the weather was gorgeous! Just one beautiful day after another.
Meanwhile in Kansas -
Also, my partner is confirming that when I leave town, the weather goes south. (South-central Kansas in this case.)
When I left, it poured for several days. And yesterday there was such severe winds that my Facebook feed was filled with friends and neighbors showing the destruction around town.
One showed that the tornado siren had blown off the building. It’s the siren that warns everyone to seek shelter when a tornado is coming. It’s never a good day when the tornado siren blows off the building.
My partner’s power was out for like 15 hours. It was excruciatingly hot and he could only cool down and charge his phone in his car in between cleaning up all the limbs from the trees in his yard.
His sister, who lives a few miles away, had her whole carport blow away from over the top of her van!
The moral of the story?
I guess the moral of these stories is that if you want gorgeous weather during your vacation, please invite me along with you. 😆
I've also brought gorgeous weather to Vancouver! Also last year I was in Chicago in April (very sketchy time, weather-wise) for the first sunny weekend. So delightful.
I'll be in Kansas in mid-August so I hope you'll be home, keeping the good weather there with ya!
Yes, come with me when I go to the northwest! Not sure when.
Actually I had some of that there, too. We were there 3 days- it was all very nice!
